It's The Most Wonderful Day of the Year
Yes, it’s that time again.
We’ve been building up to it all year long, and to say that
I’ve been looking forward to it for the past 360-odd days
would be an understatement. All year long, I’ve been dreaming
of this moment, this wonderful day when I wake up and say,
“Today is the day!” and leap out of bed with
excitement.
No, it’s not Christmas.
It’s the day the cleaning lady comes.
ONE DAY a year, we hire a cleaning lady to go over our house top to bottom. She comes early in the morning, and doesn’t leave until dinner time. She cleans the baseboards. She washes the windows. She cleans all the ceiling fans. Well.
In short, she does all the stuff I’m supposed to do, probably more than once a year.
And on that one glorious day, I get to be in a beautiful, sparkling house. Everything’s put away, surfaces are spotless, and it just smells clean. And then I wake up the next morning and come downstairs and I swear to you, it’s better than Christmas to see the gleaming kitchen and pristine living room.
Sure, the kids will be up and breakfast will explode the kitchen and soon books will litter the living room once more, but for those few quiet moments, I get to pretend that this is how I really live.
It’s a good thing.
So today is the day – my best friend, the nice lady who remembers to put me on her calendar every year, will be showing up after school drop-off.
The sound you hear tonight will be my sigh of contentment.
